“Have the courage to use your own reason- That is the motto of enlightenment.”
― Immanuel Kant, Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals
Yet again, another fantastic quote from one of our past philosophers living in the sands of our understanding.
This quote got me thinking for days and It left me with more questions than answers. Questions like: why are we so afraid of ourselves? Why do we trust other’s reason? Why does it take so much courage for some to think for themselves? Why do people want to be enlightened? Why do we accept the ideas of others without even analyzing our own ideas? Why fear?
As I was getting ready to turn off my brain, (which is extremely difficult to do) I started to realize (with that quote in mind) that the problem with today’s society is that we are not courageous. We are so afraid of our thoughts, of the way we perceive the world and even of our own beliefs. Perhaps we are afraid of them because they are not ours or cause we know deep inside of us, that they are true. In a sense, we enslaved ourselves shaping our world view by somebody’s reason. We want to reach that level that some call “Enlightment” but WHY? The beauty of this life, of our life, is to experience. To know a concept is not enough, we must experience it.
Perhaps this quote simple means to be YOU, to have the courage to experience the world in a way that will help you reach your fullest potential as a human BEING. In all of these endeavors of thinking, the only thing that should be present in all of us is COURAGE.
There is not much more I can say about this quote cause I am still thinking about it, but the more I do the less I can put my thoughts in writing. Perhaps after a couple of months or even a year; the ideas, emotions and feelings about this quote will pour out, but until then, my mind will be extremely busy.
Stay thirsty for knowledge, but do not forget to weight that knowledge with your experiences and to use that knowledge. Remember, do not be afraid to be YOU, the real YOU. Use your own REASON: “Have the courage to use your own reason- That is the motto of enlightenment.” Or I should say, “that is the motto of seeing the world as YOU, through your own eyes.”
Leave your thoughts about this quote, I am intrigued to read how you perceive this quote or how you can dissect it further. Thank you and don’t forget to think, for a thing will be just a thing, until you think beyond that thing.
